Binding Equipment

Postby JaneJones on Sat Jan 12, 2008 2:47 pm

I am in the process of setting up a binding table and am in the market for a book press, a nipping press and miscellaneous tools. Regarding the presses - I would prefer 10 X 12 but will entertain other sizes. Please e-mail me at mjanejones@gmail.com with items you have or know where I might find them. Thanks in advance. Jane

For a simple, yet effective and well made press (you don't mention budget range) I like the large wooden press sold by Arnold Grummer, . They're simple, robust (I had mine used by students when teaching in my home studio), and at $249 quite affordable. The size is also good for most books.

For paper and books up to 11 x 14. Classic press delivers 2000 lbs. of evenly controlled pressure with 6 inches of daylight between the press floor and fully raised platen.

Platen measures 11.5 inches by 14.5 inches. Baltic birch, fully assembled, maintenance free. 28 lbs.

Hi!
Last year I bought a combined tool for sewing, pressing, and backing books. It is sold from Sweden but that shouldn't be a problem. It is very good for hobby bookbinding. I have one. Have a look at this site:

Presses

Postby aaronsalik on Mon Jan 14, 2008 3:22 am

Besides for a large assortment of sewing frames, presses, etc that we maintain from stock, we also have a fairly large inventory of antique presses that we brought over in a container from England. These are old cast iron presses ranging in size from 9"x12" to 12" x 18". They can be found on our web site here:

I'm selling two old bookbinding presses on ebay, if you'd be interested. The links are:

I see on your ebay description that you plan to dismantle the presses, I would suggest you don't, the main screws are corroded and probably frozen, you risk breaking the stem and visit the machinist to fix it....

You should check this guy out on ebay. He builds them himself.. nothing but good feedback on his work and much more reasonable then anyplace else I have seen for this size press.

$169.00 plus shipping.. this is where I will buy mine when I can. I contacted him via email because I needed one that would handle a little over 11 x 17 and he will custom make it for me.

Gaylord Brothers Library Supply sells a very simple but extremely efficient press in two sizes with boards. They are based on a pipe vise type system and are extremely easy to adjust for 1 to 5 books at a time. I have two of these and 3 cast iron presses. I use these more because of the ease of adjustment and you don't have to extend the legs and then add cribbing to get more than one book in at a time.

I would check out Lloyd's of Indiana Inc. in Indianapolis. They have all kinds of book binding equipment and supplies. Hope this helps!
