BOOKBINDERS WORKSHOP, LLC is very pleased to announce our "Lost Gutenbergs"
binding project. This is the true and exacting period-style binding of one
hundred-nine (109), two-volume (218 text-blocks) 1961 Cooper Square
Publishers facsimiles of the Gutenberg Bible. These bibles were previously
unknown to exist. It was just earlier this year that they were located in
New England. Over the years there have been some of these beautiful
facsimiles "bound", but they have never been bound historically correct, in
true mid-15th Century style.
This post is to announce that Bookbinders Workshop, llc will be offering
numerous FREE workshops throughout 2008 (and part of 2009) in wooden board
binding. These FREE workshops will relate specifically to the Gutenberg
Bible. Interested parties can email us at:: info@bookbindersworkshop.com
The FREE workshops will address the following:
VIDEO ORIENTATION. There will be a fifteen minute video orientation of the
history of the "Cooper Square Gutenberg" and how, together, Cooper Square
Publishers and Bookbinders Workshop (though separated by half a century)
have achieved the PERFECT facsimile-replica of the highly coveted Gutenberg
Bible.
SEWING CORD. Demonstration of MAKING sewing cord that is stronger than the
traditional. BBWS has made our own 3/8" inch diameter (beautifully soft!)
sewing cord.
TEXT SEWING. Demonstration of sewing each Gutenberg Bible volume on four
stations of double cords, herringbone style.
END-PAPERS. Demonstration of historically correct 15th Century style, for
the Gutenberg Bible.
ALUM-TAWED PIGSKIN. How and where it's made. Softening, paring, covering
with, aging, and tooling.
WOODEN BOARDS. Selecting the proper wood. How they are prepared, beveled and
dressed to the book. (BBWS has created a new innovative design for making
solid wooden cover boards that do not warp).
HEADBANDING. Mid-15th Century options. Demonstration of options. Correctly lacing
headband cores to the wooden boards.
CLASP & CORNER BOSSES. Demonstration of making historically correct 15th
Century decorative brass clasps, catches, and corner bosses. This will
include hand decorative engraving.
TOOLING. Demonstration of all-over blind tooling of the two volumes of our
Gutenberg Bibles.
BOXING & PRESENTATION. How BBWS has achieved the ultimate in archival
preservation of these extremely rare one hundred-nine facsimile-replicas.
Each workshop size is limited, so if you're interested you should submit
your details now. Many have already signed up!
