I have been attempting to edge gild with gold leaf for almost three years with no success.
When I wrap the book block to release the pages I also release the gold - onto the floor!
I have tried various types of glaire and BS and diluted PVA.
I have recently replaced my edge decoration with colour and gild-gauffering with moderate success but I would still like to produce a gold edge.
Now, I have been told about a roller for edge gilding at £300- pricey as I am a hobbyist and retired.
Does anyone have any experience with this process. Would you recommend it ?

I rarely visit this forum so I don't know if you're posting received any answers.
In my humble opinion, you should not be using glaire edge gilding. You are far better off using a starch size. Old fashioned laundry starch without any added silicon is best, dissolve a level teaspoon of it in half a pint of water, bring to the boil and remove from heat immediately. When cooled you will have a great adhesive for edge gilding.
