Novice Needs Advice on Large Project

Postby RMAlliston on Thu Mar 27, 2008 4:28 pm

I am helping a church prepare a large print version of their Book of Common Prayer. We are currently editing the text, and are beginning to investigate how we will get it bound. Altogether we probably need abotu 50 copies, but could possibly need significantly more. We need advice on the choices we need to make in planning the binding. In particular we need to decide whether to raise the money to pay to have the books bound, or whether it is practical to form a group of roughly half a dozen people who want to learn binding and do it ourselves. I think we can form such a group and there is the possibility we could continue producing this one product for several years to supply local demand. If you are willing to spend a half hour on the phone, you could help us more than you may ever know!! Please call me at 203 869-6600 extention 50 or write. Thanks

Depending on what kind of "quality" you expect I think getting a group together to do it is a great idea.

Most of the people in the group don't even have to learn much of the binding process, because many of the steps of the binding can be done by just a few people.

I think folding and sewing are the steps where you get most help from using more people.

But if you want to do it in leather I think you need someone professional for that part, because working with leather require skills and experience.

One has to agree..

One has to agree with the idea of a DIY project being a sound idea.

But, it is easy for an experienced crafts person to see how it could be done, an overlook the possibility that no one in the group has access to the big picture.

I think it might well be necessary for someone in the group to get some experience, or call on someone who has it.

I still like very much the idea of a group effort, mention has been made of the savings in time by doing all the folding and sewing etc.

But I still think, (having reached the end of my 10 cents worth.) that someone in the group should have experience of binding, even it is only at a fairly rudimentary level.

Regards

Richard
