Unconventional book binding

Tue Aug 26, 2014 3:29 pm

Hi all,

I have an unconventional book binding problem:

When I travel I like to keep a journal, and I do so at the back my notebook. Over the years this means I have about 3 notebooks which are mostly nonsense but with my travel diary at the end.

Here's what the notebooks look like:

I would like to bind these sections together into one travel journal.
If possible I would like the binding to allow for more sections to be added in the future.
A Screw-post binding seemed promising, but I don't think I have enough room in the margin. (see photo)

Can anyone suggest a method?

Thanks in advance,

jravnal

P.S. I don't mind damaging the notebooks to get the pages out.

You're right. It looks like you don't have enough margin for posts.

To put these into one volume, you'd have to take them apart and resew them all together. That would be fairly straight forward, but that doesn't take into account the possibility of added more signatures in the future.

It would be very labor intensive to "guard" each page but you could then use a post and add more in the future. Guarding involves adding a width of paper to each page to give you that margin you would need to punch a hole through for the post (or 3-ring binder.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other method. Sorry

You could always perfect bind the separate pages. I would suggest Plantol glue if you do. They have greatly improved perfect binding glue in the last few years.
