New to all of this and would like some advice please

Postby voracious on Thu Oct 03, 2013 6:06 am

Greetings folks, I'm quite new to all of this and have recently became interested in bookbinding. After a brief tussle with the search engine I've washed up on these digital shores, seeking some pointers to achieve what I want and more. Here's the sketch:

I'm quite a voracious reader and recently I was kindly gifted a whole set of scanned PDFs of a series of old, arcane, out of print tomes that I was most glad to receive. Never before have I forayed into the land of digital representation and I can safely say, I don't like reading from the screen. Attempting to find a way out of this quandary I tried to print them one out but its not quite the same wielding sheets of A4 paper so I ended up here:

Complete beginner to all of this but what I'd like to accomplish is a finished product similar to this:

Image

Perfect binding is the way for me. The books average at about 450 pages each and I wish for them to come out the same size as a normal book, ideally for all intents and purposes it would be most spiffing if they had all the attributes of a regular book (nice to the touch, rugged, durable, nice paper to read from etc..) as I believe a job worth doing is worth doing right.

I have access to a computer with a full installation of Adobe on it and I've just ordered a printer (a mono laser with autoduplex) but aside from that I'm a complete beginner looking for some help on how to turn my idea into reality.

Thanks for reading - v

Hi. I just joined this site, and see no one has replied. What you're looking for is padding compound. Line up all the pages you want to bind, apply compound as directed, let dry. This is the only padding compound I've used, and it's worked great: http://www.cfsbinds.com/padsup.html

Good luck!

Voracious,

This is called a 'perfect binding'. I don't know about 'padding compound' but I'm going to look into it. (Acgrout - thank you for that tip)

Commercially, I believe this is done with a heat applied adhesive but I have great success using regular PVA and the double fan method. Take a look at this: http://aboutthebinding.blogspot.com/201 ... bound.html
