I have a 1483 Boethius currently bound in crude modern (perhaps 1920s) paste-paper boards. I asked about approaches to the rebind from a number of informed sources in the rare book world (including the 7/17 post below, "Incunabula Rebinding - Any Special Advice?"). I got some good ideas of substantive approach, but also heard from more than one advisor, "Use a 'name' binder, appropriate for such a rare issue."
So my question: Who are the leading bookbinders, artisans whose binderies are most recognized by the rare book audience of our current era? I know which names from the 19th and 20th centuries are most coveted, but who are the leaders today? Would you expect their work to be much more expensive than others?
